‘We Can Trust Bob’
Congressman Tancredo Says Gilmore’s Record ‘Suggests’ He Supports Amnesty for Illegal Aliens
Congressman Tom Tancredo (R., Colo.), a leading Capitol Hill proponent of immigration reform, has endorsed Del. Bob Marshall (R., Manassas) for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate from Virginia.
“Bob Marshall is the only candidate in the race we can count on to secure America’s borders and enforce our immigration laws,” Tancredo, founder and former chairman of the bipartisan House Immigration Reform Caucus, said Wednesday evening (May 21) at a Washington, D.C., reception.
“We can trust Bob Marshall to oppose amnesty for illegal aliens. In the House of Delegates, Bob has a strong record of doing what he could on the state level to stop illegal immigration. Instead of making vague statements about border security, Bob has a clear-cut plan to build a fence along the border, crack down on employers who hire illegals, and end birthright citizenship.”
Tancredo contrasted Marshall’s record with that of Jim Gilmore, his opponent for the Senate nomination. Earlier this year, both Tancredo and Gilmore ended their campaigns for the Republican presidential nomination.
“Jim Gilmore says he’s against amnesty, but he has a long record that suggests otherwise,” Tancredo said. “Less than a year ago, while campaigning for the presidency in Iowa, I witnessed Gilmore give a speech supporting a policy that sounded like amnesty to me.”
The grandson of immigrants, Tancredo also is founding chairman of Team American PAC, dedicated to securing our nation’s borders and stopping illegal immigration. Angela “Bay” Buchanan, the PAC’s current chairman and former treasurer of the United States during President Ronald Reagan’s administration, also attended the reception. Marshall’s candidacy has been endorsed by the PAC and personally by Buchanan.
On March 29, Marshall’s candidacy also was endorsed by U.S. Border Control, a Virginia-based organization founded in 1988 and dedicated to ending illegal immigration by securing America’s borders and reforming immigration policies.
At that time, Marshall cited “New politics of immigration,” a Sept. 4, 2001, news article by Mark Benjamin, United Press International’s congressional bureau chief, reporting Gilmore’s support for a program that would have led to U.S. citizenship for aliens illegally in America. At the time, Gilmore was governor of Virginia and chairman of the Republican National Committee.
