Bob Will ‘Excite Republican Base’’

GUN OWNERS OF AMERICA’S POLITICAL ARM BACKS MARSHALL FOR SENATE

Gun Owners of America’s Political Victory Fund (GOA-PVF), the political arm of the “no compromise” Springfield, Va., advocacy organization for the Constitution’s Second Amendment, is backing Del. Bob Marshall (R., Manassas) for the 2008 Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate.

Tim Macy, GOA-PVF’s board vice chairman, in a March 11 e-mail alert to the lobbying organization’s members, said Marshall “has demonstrated a willingness to put his colleagues on the spot when they are putting politics over people’s safety.” Marshall “will be a hard-charger for gun rights if elected to the U.S. Senate,” Macy said.

“It will take someone like [Marshall] to excite the Republican base, which he will do not just on the firearms issue,” according to Macy. “At the moment, Republican voters are disillusioned because they do not see politicians taking their issues seriously.

“The [Nov. 4] general election will pit the Republican nominee against former Gov. Mark Warner, who signed some firearms bills into law while he was governor. Yet Marshall is the only candidate who will raise the issue of allowing students and staff to carry firearms on campus [of colleges and universities].”

GOA-PVF noted that Marshall, in the Virginia General Assembly this year, “did everything he could to get a vote on a measure to keep universities from firing staff who are carrying concealed handguns with a permit.” Marshall asserts that, by prohibiting students from exercising concealed-carry rights on campus that other persons have, Virginia’s public college and university officials are going beyond state law as prescribed by the Virginia General Assembly.

Marshall’s legislative efforts came in response to the April 16, 2007, massacre of 32 students and faculty members on Virginia Tech’s Blacksburg campus by a deranged student who then committed suicide.

Macy urged gun owners and other Second Amendment supporters to sign up as delegates to the Republican Party of Virginia’s May 29-31 convention at the Richmond Convention Center, where the GOP Senate candidate will be chosen.
