FOR RELEASE: On Receipt                                                                                                 April 11, 2008

STATEMENT OF:                Bill Kling, News Director, Marshall for Senate

SUBJECT:                             Jim Gilmore’s meandering position on abortion

Will the real Jim Gilmore please stand up?

Ana Gamonal, communications director for Jim Gilmore's U.S. Senate campaign, was interviewed within the last several days by Cybercast News Service correspondent Evan Moore for a CNS article, “Social Conservatives Rally to Marshall in VA Senate Race.”

In the CNS article, Moore directly quotes Ms. Gamonal as follows:

"[Gilmore's] record when he was in the strongest position to advance the pro-life cause, which was when he was governor, is second-to-none.

"He was the most pro-life and proactive governor that Virginia's had.

“[Gilmore] does not favor abortion in any circumstance." [Emphasis added]

That’s astounding, considering that Mr. Gilmore, at the beginning of his bid for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, said quite the opposite during a cable television interview by CNN’s Wolf Blitzer last May – less than a year ago.  From CNN’s transcript:

Blitzer: Your position on abortion, correct me if I'm wrong, suggests that there is a moment, at least early on in a woman's pregnancy, when abortion would be OK.  Is that right?

Gilmore: Well, OK is not exactly the way I would put it.  But what I would say is this: There has to be some time for the baby to form in the womb, which I think happens at about eight weeks. And after that, I think that abortion should be limited except to save the life of the mother.

Blitzer: Between the beginning and eight weeks, abortion would be OK if                                 necessary?

Gilmore: Not OK, but the question is, should the law prohibit it at that point?  And I've never taken that position.

In addition, Mr. Gilmore has been serving since May 2002 on the board of directors of Barr Laboratories, Inc.  Barr produces “Plan B,” a controversial “morning after” abortifacient pill.  Urged to resign from that board, Mr. Gilmore has declined.
