ADVISORY to Editors, News Directors and Reporters
FOR YOUR INFORMATION: Food-to-Fuel Doesn't Make Sense in Texas, Either
As you know, Del. Bob Marshall (R., Manassas) has requested that Gov. Timothy Kaine ask the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for a temporary waiver of the federal mandate requiring Virginia to use corn-based ethanol for fuel.
Kaine has declined, even though the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Energy Secretary indicate that the mandate is a factor in driving up food prices, creating a burden on family budgets.
Marshall has noted that knowledgeable sources contend ethanol production is causing further pollution of the environment, specifically from run-off of pollutants from cropland increased to grow more corn. In particular, he points out, that is affecting the already endangered Chesapeake Bay vital to Virginia’s economy.
Now comes Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who has made such a waiver request of EPA. Perry’s April 25 letter to EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson is attached, along with Marshall’s earlier news releases on this issue.
Why not Kaine?
And why is Jim Gilmore silent on this issue so critically important to the well-being of Virginia’s families?
