"Marshall's legislative creativity knows no rival in Richmond. A
bill-drafting giant, he is smart, principled and owns a sizeable sense
of humor."
"Even people who think Del. Robert G. Marshall is dead wrong... admit
he's extremely smart, very personal and, unfortunately for them,
effective.

RICHMOND—A sharply split Virginia Republican Convention nominated former Gov. Jim Gilmore to run for the seat of retiring Republican Sen. John Warner.
Gilmore won 50.3 percent of the delegate votes Saturday over conservative Del. Robert G. Marshall, R-Prince William, the Virginia General Assembly's most ardent foe of abortion and gay marriage.
The slim margin—about 65 votes, less than a percentage point—leaves Gilmore to face popular, well-funded Democrat Mark Warner in the fall election in a state where the GOP lost the past two gubernatorial races and the 2006 Senate election. |

RICHMOND, June 2 -- Saturday's Virginia Republican Party convention, at which conservatives ousted the state party chairman and put a scare into former governor James S. Gilmore III's senatorial hopes, will have lasting consequences on state policy and the direction of the GOP, several Republicans said Monday.
For the second straight year, social and anti-tax conservatives dominated the nomination process, sending a clear signal to GOP legislators and office-seekers that they need to oppose taxes and abortion to succeed. |

RICHMOND – Two of the three presidential hopefuls, a Republican and a Democrat, want to suspend the federal gas tax for the summer driving season.
In Virginia, two of the three hopefuls for U.S. Senate — a Republican and a Democrat — think that is a bad idea.
Democrat Mark R. Warner and GOP Del. Bob Marshall see problems if the federal government suspends the 18.4-cent-per-gallon excise tax on gasoline to help consumers deal with high gas prices. |

WAKEFIELD—The race for John Warner's seat in the U.S. Senate began in earnest at the Wakefield Ruritan Club Wednesday, as hundreds of people turned out to eat shad and hear from the top three contenders for that job.
Former Virginia governors Mark Warner, a Democrat, and Jim Gilmore, a Republican, were joined on the stage at the 60th annual Shad Planking by Republican Bob Marshall, a member of the House of Delegates from Northern Virginia.
Each of the three men marked the one-year anniversary of the Virginia Tech shootings and then set out to rally his troops in what has become Virginia political tradition. |
