Washington Times Offers to Host First Debate
Del. Bob Marshall (R., Manassas) said Friday (April 11) that candidates seeking the GOP nomination for the U.S. Senate “owe it to Virginia’s Republican voters to meet in a series of five debates across the Old Dominion.”
“Only in this way will the delegates to next month’s Republican State Convention be able to select the best candidate to face Mark Warner in the November general election,” Marshall said. “Today I sent letters to Jim Gilmore and Bob Berry asking them if they would join me in arranging such a series of debates.”
Gilmore and Berry also are seeking the Republican Senate nomination. Former Gov. Mark R. Warner is the Democrats’ presumptive Senate nominee.
The Washington Times has agreed to host the first debate at a time and date to be established, Marshall said.
Marshall is running for the GOP Senate nomination on a broadly based “Life, Liberty, Property” platform.
Local party conventions and mass meetings around Virginia are electing delegates for the Republican State Convention, to be held May 30-31 at the Richmond Convention Center.
“It is the norm in Virginia for voters to see where the candidates stand on the issues in a public forum,” Marshall said. “This election should be no different.”
