Northern Virginia YRs Say Candidates Owe Region ‘Joint Appearance in Form of Debate’

Del. Bob Marshall (R., Manassas) on Thursday (April 24) accepted the invitation of three major Young Republican Clubs in Northern Virginia to a campaign debate in the third week of May with his opponent for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate.

“We have already had Gilmore refuse a debate that the Washington Times wanted to host,” Steve Waters, Marshall’s campaign manager, wrote in responding to the YRs’ invitation. “but we will be at your debate regardless if Gilmore shows or is absent.”

FOR YOUR INFORMATION: Food-to-Fuel Doesn't Make Sense in Texas, Either

As you know, Del. Bob Marshall (R., Manassas) has requested that Gov. Timothy Kaine ask the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for a temporary waiver of the federal mandate requiring Virginia to use corn-based ethanol for fuel.

Kaine has declined, even though the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Energy Secretary indicate that the mandate is a factor in driving up food prices, creating a burden on family budgets.

Baloney! That was our succinct reaction several days ago when Jim Gilmore’s campaign issued a statement, attributed to its field director, Matt Wells, claiming already to have enough committed delegates to win the GOP nomination for the U.S. Senate at the May 30-31 Republican State Convention in Richmond.

First, delegates in several key areas won’t be elected until this coming weekend, and Bob Marshall’s campaign has confidence that the nomination fight is too close to call.

Candidate for GOP Senate Nomination Says Increasing Program Would Give Workers More Time with Families

Del. Bob Marshall pledged Tuesday (April 22) that, if elected to the U.S. Senate, he will seek ways to compel the federal government to permit more of its civilian employees to work from their homes or telecommuting centers, saving gasoline used to drive to and from their jobs.

“With rising gasoline prices forcing families to adjust food budgets and take other ‘belt tightening’ measures, it’s time we put teeth into federal telework laws by allowing more federal workers to telecommute,” Marshall (R., Manassas), a candidate for the GOP Senate nomination, said in Earth Day 2008 remarks prepared for a meeting of the Frederick County Republican Committee.

Del. Bob Marshall (R., Manassas) is taking sharp issue with Gov. Timothy M. Kaine over Kaine’s refusal to seek a temporary waiver of a federal order causing diversion of corn from food and livestock feed to biofuels production.

Marshall, a candidate for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate, asserts that the biofuels order is harming Virginia families and watermen by causing higher grocery prices and increasing pollution of the Chesapeake Bay.  Marshall contends that Kaine’s refusal to seek a waiver is based on incorrect information and faulty assumptions.

Del. Bob Marshall (R., Manassas) said Monday (April 14) that Jim Gilmore’s refusal to debate is leaving delegates to next month’s Republican State Convention “virtually in the dark” on important issues before they select a nominee for the U.S. Senate.

Marshall and Gilmore are vying for the nomination. On Friday, Marshall proposed that Gilmore and he, along with a third candidate, meet in a series of debates before the May 30-31 nominating convention at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. The Washington Times has offered to host the first debate.

WAKEFIELD—The race for John Warner's seat in the U.S. Senate began in earnest at the Wakefield Ruritan Club Wednesday, as hundreds of people turned out to eat shad and hear from the top three contenders for that job.

Former Virginia governors Mark Warner, a Democrat, and Jim Gilmore, a Republican, were joined on the stage at the 60th annual Shad Planking by Republican Bob Marshall, a member of the House of Delegates from Northern Virginia.

Each of the three men marked the one-year anniversary of the Virginia Tech shootings and then set out to rally his troops in what has become Virginia political tradition.
