RICHMOND, June 2 -- Saturday's Virginia Republican Party convention, at which conservatives ousted the state party chairman and put a scare into former governor James S. Gilmore III's senatorial hopes, will have lasting consequences on state policy and the direction of the GOP, several Republicans said Monday.
For the second straight year, social and anti-tax conservatives dominated the nomination process, sending a clear signal to GOP legislators and office-seekers that they need to oppose taxes and abortion to succeed. |

RICHMOND—A sharply split Virginia Republican Convention nominated former Gov. Jim Gilmore to run for the seat of retiring Republican Sen. John Warner.
Gilmore won 50.3 percent of the delegate votes Saturday over conservative Del. Robert G. Marshall, R-Prince William, the Virginia General Assembly's most ardent foe of abortion and gay marriage.
The slim margin—about 65 votes, less than a percentage point—leaves Gilmore to face popular, well-funded Democrat Mark Warner in the fall election in a state where the GOP lost the past two gubernatorial races and the 2006 Senate election. |

Big Day Tomorrow in Virginia: Go Bob Marshall! [Jack Fowler]
Former Governor Jim Gilmore and State Delegate Bob Marshall battle it out at the state GOP convention in Richmond – the winner gets to take on Dem Mark Warner to replace U.S. Senator John Warner. Gilmore is in the role of Goliath, but Underdog Bob is pretty accomplished with the political sling and the policy rock. He’s principled, pro-life, and populist (while Tom Davis and his brand of Republicans have been sucking wind in northern Va., the election day numbers for Bob, who represents Manassas, have been growing annually). He’s also a very deft legislator / politician. F’reggzample: from Day One he fought the crazy, voter-detested “Abusive Driver” tax legislation, and after it passed (over his diligent efforts), Bob led the legal fight to kill it (the VA Supreme Court declared the scheme unconstitutional this February).
What’s the support of National Review’s publisher worth? Yes, a club soda on an NR cruise. But whatever its worth, I hope it helps: I’m backing Bob Marshall, and I hope to heck he wins tomorrow and in November to become the Commonwealth’s next senator.

?Grotesque Decision?
?Strongly? Urges Virginia Attorney General McDonnell to Carry Case to U.S. Supreme Court
Del. Bob Marshall (R., Manassas) today scored the federal Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals for its decision overturning Virginia?s partial-birth abortion law, charging that the ruling ?is a corruption of law, and the procedure is the destruction of medicine.?
?I strongly urge the Attorney General [Bob] McDonnell to appeal this grotesque decision, and I hope that the members of the U.S. Supreme Court will first of all read my statute,? Marshall, who authored the law passed by the Virginia General Assembly to prevent the killing of human children in the process of birth, said.
?I fully hope that infanticide will not become the law of the land by judicial decree.? |

Warner and Marshall oppose the idea. Gilmore says it is worth considering.
BY HUGH LESSIG
RICHMOND – Two of the three presidential hopefuls, a Republican and a Democrat, want to suspend the federal gas tax for the summer driving season.
In Virginia, two of the three hopefuls for U.S. Senate — a Republican and a Democrat — think that is a bad idea.
Democrat Mark R. Warner and GOP Del. Bob Marshall see problems if the federal government suspends the 18.4-cent-per-gallon excise tax on gasoline to help consumers deal with high gas prices. |
